One of Chicago's main curiosities, completely incorrect, cites the Water Tower as the only building in the city that survived the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Virtually no part of Chicago's history was affected in any way by the river (although, ironically, the Great Chicago Fire crossed the river with little difficulty). I came to Chicago from Norway to study and work this semester, which makes it even more exciting for me to learn about the culture of Chicago and get to know such a large and diverse city.
