The country's only national museum dedicated to Puerto Rico's arts and culture is located in Humboldt Park, Chicago's proud Puerto Rican neighborhood. Visitors enter through a spectacular brick arch and arrive at a magnificent courtyard adorned with mosaics representing the island and the people of Puerto Rico. The Queen Anne-style building that occupies the museum is an architectural delight, as it served as a stable for horses in the late 19th century. It offers beautiful views of the gardens, lagoons and green spaces of Humboldt Park itself.
Established in 1935, the Polish Museum of America in West Town is one of the largest and oldest cultural history museums in the country. It exhibits an extensive collection of artifacts, including paintings and sculptures by Polish and Polish-American artists, objects from the Polish pavilion of the 1939 New York World's Fair, and examples of popular traditions (including traditional nativity scenes). Visit the Paderewski Hall, dedicated to the life and historic achievements of pianist, composer and statesman Ignacy Jan Paderewski. And visit the exhibitions of other famous Poles, such as Pope John Paul II, General Casimir Pulaski, and Shakespeare actress Helena Modrzejewska (Modjeska).
This is a fabulous place to visit, with a contemporary art collection representing one of the world's largest collections of Ukrainian-American abstract and minimalist works from the fifties, sixties, and seventies. You'll see incredible sculptures, paintings, engravings, photographs, fiber arts, and ceramics by artists like Nancy Polotkin, Christina Saj, Yevhen Prokopov, and Elisabeth Frink, as well as fascinating exhibitions, concerts, readings, and conferences throughout the year. The National Museum of Ukraine is renowned for having one of the most important folk art collections outside of Ukraine, with more than 10,000 objects, including wedding and party attire, richly embroidered fabrics and fabrics, ceramics, metal work, decorative wood-carved objects from the 19th and 20th centuries, and an impressive collection of Ukrainian Easter eggs. Added to this is a fine art collection consisting of approximately 500 paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures by prominent Ukrainian artists of the 20th century.
